Mike - what does the election of a new President have to do with this? Are you saying this would have been different under a different administration? I think not.

This is more internal destruction of our Country by a President that was elected on a bed of lies. We were warned that his muslim background would infiltrate our Nation. This decision is almost Biblical. The NASA budget costs each American 1/10th of one cent per year. Now we are forced to face what all previous Presidents endeavored to avoid - we will now be followers rather than leaders. We won't even be in second place with the Russians still launching humans into space and India planning manned space flight as early as 2016. The United States Space Program and NASA have continuously provided mankind with innovations since the 1960's, over 40 years of breakthroughs in technology, health and others.
This makes the launching of all previous satellites, probes, and other important things useless. The billions spent on all of these important vessels is now atcomplete risk. With no Space Shuttle we can no longer service or repair important or possibly even dangerous satellites. We can no longer service the Hubble, which will eventually fall from orbit.
Americans beware! Soon this madman will have all women wearing veils!

I can certainly understand the viewpoint. The goals are far-thinking. It's pretty much impossible to peg monetary value on them. It's a bad idea to stay Earthbound. Something, either internal or external, will eventually snuff us out. It's in our best interest to start working on expanding out. And to be able to defend ourselves from external threats (not aliens! hehe) Some things can only be accomplished by the whole (that is the federal government). That's the point of their existence. Big projects like this that will benefit everyone in the long run are one of those things. Sadly - without any big projects or direction the space program will indeed end. Private space just isn't up to the task yet. Either technologically nor motivationally. And without some immediate profit incentive they never will be. Not everything is about profit.

I hate to say it, but I'm not all that disappointed in this decision. As much as I love the idea of NASA, spaceflight, and going to other planets, the reality is that I don't see the value in it, especially at this point in time. Why do we need to go back to the moon? What's the point of trying to send someone to Mars, other than to simply say we've been? Even in NASA's glory days, it was mainly there to make sure the Russians were behind the curve instead of leading it.

Also, from what I've read, NASA's budget was actually increased... they're just allotting the money to something other than manned space travel. Maybe that's a good thing. I don't want to see the space program end, but I think NASA needs to seriously rethink not only their goals, but the value those goals represent to this country.

That's just my two cents...
